Size the capacitor bank you need

Enter your load and present power factor. We calculate the kVAR to add, a suggested APFC bank, the drop in current and kVA, and what it can save on your bill.

You’ll get
  • Required kVAR and bank size
  • Lower current and kVA demand
  • Savings and payback

How we calculate

Method & assumptions

  • Required kVARkW × (tan φ₁ − tan φ₂), where φ is the angle of the power factor.
  • Bank sizeRounded up to standard APFC steps (5 / 12.5 / 25 kVAR).
  • CurrentI = kVA × 1000 ÷ (√3 × V).
  • SavingReduction in kVA × your demand charge × 12. Utility incentives or penalties are not included.
  • HarmonicsIn plants with significant harmonics, detuned (reactor-protected) banks are recommended.
FAQ

About this calculator

What target power factor should I choose?

0.95 to 0.99 is common. Many utilities give incentives above 0.95 and penalise below 0.90; check your tariff.

Can I over-correct?

Yes - leading power factor can cause voltage rise and resonance. An automatic (APFC) panel switches steps to follow the load.

Do I need detuned capacitors?

If your load has VFDs, UPS or other harmonic sources, detuned reactors are advised. Our engineers will check this in the proposal.

Is the cost accurate?

No - it is a planning figure. The bank, panel make and reactors change the price.
