How to Choose an LT Induction Motor: The Specs That Matter

Selecting a motor from a nameplate alone invites trouble. Before you request a quote, settle these points:

  • Power and speed — rated kW and poles (2, 4, 6 or 8), which fix the synchronous speed.
  • Efficiency class — IE2 (high) or IE3 (premium) under IS:12615; higher classes cost more up front and less to run.
  • Mounting and frame — foot, flange or foot-cum-flange (B3, B5, B35) and the frame size that matches your base plate.
  • Enclosure and protection — IP55 is the usual baseline for dusty or washed-down areas; hazardous zones need flameproof construction.
  • Duty — continuous (S1), intermittent, crane or mill duty change the thermal design.
