Typical applications

  • Substation maintenance
  • Replacement of failed components
  • Planned shutdown spares

Key features

  • Compatible with common makes
  • Rated parts matched to the system
  • Test certificates on request

Selection notes

Substation spares depend on voltage class, so first note the system voltage (for example 11 kV or 33 kV), the fault level and whether the equipment is indoor or outdoor. Parts of an isolator, a CT, a PT or a lightning arrester are not interchangeable across ratings.

  • Isolators: contact fingers, blades, insulators and operating-mechanism parts need the maker's drawing numbers or dimensions.
  • CTs and PTs: ratio, accuracy class, burden and polarity must match the existing metering and protection circuits.
  • Lightning arresters: rated for the system voltage; replace all three phases together so they age alike.
  • Fuses: match rated voltage and breaking capacity, not only the current.

Inspect for pollution, tracking and corroded contacts during outages, and plan shutdowns around DISCOM approvals where they apply. See current transformers and potential transformers for instrument transformers, and substation equipment for complete substation equipment. Work must be carried out under a permit by qualified staff.

Frequently asked questions

What details do you need for substation spares?

System voltage, equipment type and maker, rating and serial number from the nameplate, and photographs or drawings of the part. For CTs and PTs, also give the ratio, class and burden. Mention any DISCOM or inspection requirement so the parts supplied suit your approval route.

Should lightning arresters be replaced one at a time?

It is usually better to replace all three phases together, as arresters age with exposure and a mixed set can behave unevenly. Follow your maintenance policy and the manufacturer's guidance. Check older units for signs of damage at the same visit, as that tells you how aged they are.

Why do CT details matter when replacing one?

A CT with the wrong ratio, class or burden causes wrong readings or relay misoperation. Always match the old CT's secondary current, ratio and class unless the protection scheme is being redesigned. If the burden or ratio must change, an engineer should review the protection and metering settings.
